Working out your target markets and understanding your ideal client is one of THE most important steps of running a successful business.

You’ll go around in circles if you don’t work this out. You gotta get all your ducks in a row. 😉

Why do I need to do this now?

You need to do this now if:

⚠️ If you are tired of the not-knowing and second guessing every time you think about how to reach your target audience, or…

⚠️ If you’re about to take the plunge and start a brand-new business and you want a shortcut to success…

You should spend some time figuring out your ideal client so you:

  • Understand what you have to offer
  • Identify what messaging, products and services they really need
  • Ensure you speak to their deepest desires and intense wounds and how you can help them solve it.

So I can hear what you’re saying… “tell me whyyyyyyyy I need to know the ins and outs of my ideal client!” 🤔

Because when someone asks “who is your ideal client?”

You reply: “Everybody!”

Now while this is half of the title of an awesome Backstreet Boys song, your ideal audience is not “everybody” (nor is it the Backstreet Boys… sorry to break it to you!)

But in order to uncover your ideal buyers, you gotta unlock their deepest desires…

Remember:

✔️ To sell anything, you must speak to your customer’s pain points and HOW your product or service will help alleviate that pain

✔️ People buy benefits NOT features

✔️ People buy the product or service that’s easiest to understand NOT the best one on the market…

OK, so what is an avatar?

An avatar is an icon or figure representing a particular person like in a video game. In video games like Mortal Kombat, you create an avatar to play the game and progress through the levels.

In marketing, you create an imaginary person (an avatar) that represents your ideal client, so you can understand who your ideal customers are so it’s easy to find them and market to them.

How do I find my ideal client?

To find your ideal client, you have to:

  • Look at what you’re good at and who your love to work with. This’ll give you a good idea of what your target markets are.
  • Pick an ideal client and answer ideal client avatar (ICA) questions. This will help you pry open your ideal client’s head (in a non-zombie way, of course).
  • Then you craft your ideal client persona

What’s an ideal client persona?

The dictionary definition of a persona is: ‘The aspect of someone’s character that is presented to or perceived by others.’

Personas provide a great snapshot of what makes an ideal client tick.

A persona is similar to a dating profile: it’s one page that includes a headshot and info such as name, age, marital status, profession, education, location, personality traits, fears, wildest dreams, goals, etc.

For example, an ideal client could be: Business coaches living in Australia and in need of effective copywriting that positions them as an expert in their field

Where can I start?

You can start by looking at the target markets you want to work with.

Some ideal client target markets include:

  • Childcare centres
  • Councils
  • Wineries
  • Health & Wellness
  • Lawyers
  • Doctors
  • Dentists
  • Chiropractors
  • Hairdressers
  • Builders
  • Consultants
  • Plastic Surgeons
  • Landscape gardeners
  • Restaurants
  • And more…

Creating an ideal client avatar doesn’t have to mean you only work with clients who fit your avatar.

You can work with a range of clients, but having an avatar means you have a fair idea of who you can help, what messaging they respond to, and how you can help them.
